About Omega-3 Index Test
Omega-3 Index Test is an Australian service built around a single idea: knowing your omega-3 status shouldn't require a research trial. Lab-grade analysis, posted to your door, with a result you can actually act on.
First in Australia. Only in Asia-Pacific.
We're the only laboratory in the Asia-Pacific region licensed to deliver the Omega-3 Index using the original methodology defined by Harris & von Schacky (2004) in their landmark Preventive Medicine paper. Your result sits on the same internationally-recognised reference scale used in the 450+ peer-reviewed publications that cite the Omega-3 Index, including the published trials underpinning international clinical guidelines.
Who we are
Omega-3 Index Test is an Australian-operated direct-to-consumer testing service. Our test kit is manufactured in Australia and registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (ARTG 526367). Customer service, billing, kit shipping and reply-paid returns are all run from Australia.
Our analytical work is performed through a partnership with Masdiag Pty Ltd — an internationally recognised specialist in clinical lipidomics and fatty acid analysis. The partnership gives Australian customers something rare: research-grade GC-FID gas chromatography analysis, packaged as a simple at-home finger-prick test with a plain-English report.

Why we exist
Until very recently, knowing your omega-3 status in Australia was effectively a research-trial-only thing. You could buy fish oil at any pharmacy, but you couldn't easily find out whether you needed it, whether your dose was working, or whether you were already at the level published research links to better outcomes.
That started to change in 2026. After more than a decade of work led by Professor Maria Makrides and the team at SAHMRI, South Australia became the first jurisdiction in the world to offer omega-3 status testing free to all pregnant women through SA Pathology — built around a key finding: targeted higher-dose omega-3 reduces early preterm birth by roughly 42% in women with low starting levels. National rollout is in progress, and we're proud to be an industry partner supporting that broader implementation.
But omega-3 status matters well beyond pregnancy. It's linked to cardiovascular outcomes, cognitive markers, joint and inflammatory health, and visual development — with reference ranges that have been established in published research for over two decades. The science is there. What's missing is everyday accessibility.
That's what we built Omega-3 Index Test for: to make the same gold-standard fatty acid analysis available to anyone in Australia who wants to know their actual number. Same method as the reference labs. Same validation discipline. Posted to your door, no clinic visit, no GP referral.
How we work
Four principles that shape every part of our service.
The right method, not the cheap one
Gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC-FID) — the reference method for fatty acid analysis. Separates and quantifies 24 individual fatty acids per sample. The same approach used in published omega-3 trials.
Reference ranges grounded in real research
Our cutoffs aren't marketing thresholds — they map to the published research that informs international clinical guidelines and the Australian National Pregnancy Care Guidelines.
Quality checked before release
Every sample passes through automated quality control checks against validated reference ranges. Any out-of-range result is reviewed by a qualified scientist before it's released.
Plain-English reports, no spin
Your report tells you your exact result, where it sits, and what those ranges mean. We don't make therapeutic claims about individual results, and we don't try to sell you supplements off the back of it.

What we don't claim
- We don't diagnose or treat anything. An Omega-3 Index result is one input among many your GP would use to assess your overall health.
- We don't claim our test reduces preterm birth. Published evidence shows that omega-3 supplementation, targeted to women with low levels, reduces early preterm birth. The test measures your level so you can have an informed conversation about supplementation. The reduction comes from the right supplement at the right dose — not from the test itself.
- We don't claim our test is a substitute for a GP consultation. Significant or clinically relevant results should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
- We don't claim our results are diagnostic. Our kit is TGA-registered as a sample collection device (ARTG 526367). The analytical service is an informational testing service.
